Delectable Knowledge

Soledad Enrichment Action, Inc. received $10,000 from the Sawchuk Family Foundation for Delectable Knowledge, a project of the S.E.A. Charter School Girls’ Academy. The money was used to design and furnish a multi-use space which serves as a kitchen and food preparation area, dining hall, classroom, and library. Heather Flood and Jeffrey Inaba of Hola!, an architectural firm, designed the space.  Ms. Flood worked with the students at the academy to design and apply the geometric designs which encompass the room.

Delectable Knowledge was the idea of students at the Girls’ Academy under the direction of Ms. Linda Lee, their teacher.   They sought to create a program where students learn to prepare and sell nutritious food. It was developed in response to the fact that many of our students are hungry when they come to school, and the meals they do receive through the school lunch program are not enough to sustain them throughout the day.  “This program is a prototype for an experiential learning project where students can apply academic knowledge and critical thinking skills to address the genuine needs of their community,” Ms. Lee said.
