The following innovative programs and practices continue to take place within the S.E.A. Charter High School program.

Character Education

Includes resources to build and develop character in our youth and supports the core values of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.  During the 2005-2006 school year, students will have expanded opportunities to learn, practice, and demonstrate the attributes of Character Education, by planning and hosting a Youth Leadership Conference for students and parents.  Detail

Direct Instruction

Instruction is done in group settings; direct instruction emphasizes one on one instruction by the teacher using carefully sequenced, standards-based lesson plans.

Individual Learning Plans (ILP’s)

Each student enrolled in S.E.A. Charter High School has an ILP, which guides the education program for that student.  It includes assessment information and identifies the academic area(s) in which the student needs assistance.  It also contains the required courses that the student needs to complete for the 80 day contract.  The ILP also is used as a student portfolio housing a student’s work that is used by the teachers to evaluate each student’s academic progress.

Community Service

Community service experiences are provided through the completion of Service Learning Projects.  Service Learning is defined as a method under which students learn and develop through thoughtfully-organized service that: is conducted in and meets the needs of a community, is coordinated with that community, is integrated and enhances core academic curriculum, and provides structured time for students to reflect on the service experience.

Camp Unity Program

This highly structured outdoor program is provided for S.E.A. students at Camp Eaton.  It is designed to assist students in gaining self-esteem, learn problem-solving skills, and increase emotional awareness and self-confidence all while developing within themselves alternatives to the use of violence.  As funding permits, the students participate in three camping trips a year.  The trip activities include: team building, problem solving and emotional awareness activities, emotional support and discussions relating to gangs and gang non-violence, and recreational activities.  During the 2004-2005 school year, 491 students participated in the Camp Unity Program.

Technology

Every S.E.A. Charter High School classroom has Internet access and is equipped with eight computers and printers.  Each computer station can be used for Computer Assisted Learning, Internet access, word processing, and project completion.

Attendance

Throughout the fiscal year LACOE monitors schools with an Average Daily Attendance (ADA) system.  Every school has a total of 14 reporting periods.  In the 2004 - 2005 school year S.E.A. Charter High School has increased its Average Daily Attendance by an average of 1.2 students per school site.   Please refer to Chart 3.

Tutorial Sessions

One on one and small group tutoring is available as part of the extended learning time provided after school each day for two hours.  There is a focus on reading, writing, and Algebra.  Local S.E.A. Teachers & staff assisted by trained parent volunteers provide the tutoring instruction.
