Sacramento Trip

Some 50 SEA representatives consisting of students, parents, teachers and administrators meet yearly at the State Capital with state and local elected officials.

Objectives:

  • To provide students an opportunity to learn more about the state legislative process, government and history of the state.
  • To exchange ideas on how to promote services for youth at risk in the state of California.

 

Camp Eaton

The Angeles National Forest, where Camp Eaton is located, is at 6000 feet and alive with nature.

Objectives:
School Staff

  1. To provide trainings for the staff on achieving the goals and mission of SEA as they clarify their role as SEA staff.
  2. To provide staff with a venue to interact with the youth in a wilderness environment.

Youth

  • To provide the youth with a one day wilderness experience by taking them to camp Eaton.
  • To help youth discover alternatives to violence by confronting negative behavior and by helping them develop greater self-esteem and self confidence in a trusting and supportive setting.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite is located in East Central California in the Sierra Nevada range.  It is set aside by the government to protect ecosystems, plant and animal species, scenic landscapes, geologic formations, or historical or archeological sites.
Objectives:

  • To provide the youth with a 5 day Log Cabin Wilderness Camp experience at Yosemite National Forest.
  • To develop serf-awareness, including knowledge of one’s own strengths and weaknesses, one’s physical and psychological resources for coping with stressful situations, and the ability to articulate values, feelings, and beliefs.
  • To understand and practice ways to minimize the environmental impact on the land.
  • To understand and practice ways to minimize disturbance to other living creatures when traveling through back country or wilderness areas.

 

South Dakota Experience

Red Shirt Project
A number of the SEA youth participate in a two and a half day journey to Red Shirt South Dakota Pine Ridge Reservation. Together with youth of differing socio-economic backgrounds and cultures they spend 8 days working on several projects. In 2005 they assembled a baseball field and repainted their church building. The trip is lead by Rev. Robert Two Bulls who is a member of the Ogala Lakota tribe. The Bureau of Indian Affairs lists the Lakota/Ogala people as the poorest in the United States.
